The Smithsonian is Coming to Winslow!

This summer locals and visitors alike will have a different attraction to attend.  It will be informative, educational, entertaining and free!

Old Trails Museum will host "Between Fences" , a traveling exhibit for rural museums that is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and the Arizona Humanities Council.  Winslow was one of only six Arizona sites selected for this opportunity.

Five kiosks from the Smithsonian will anchor the presentation, to which will be added "Lines in the Sand, Fences, Trails, Rails and Boundaries".  The latter is the local component of the show, and is a compilation of artifacts, photographs and oral histories which highlight area fences, land use and other lines of demarcation that defined Winslow.

In addition, local schools and the library will have works by school-aged children on exhibit. In conjunction with the school project, a quilt representative of the critical elements that settled this high desert area will be on display.

A performing arts segment will begin Saturday, June 21st, and continue each Saturday through July 26th.  Each performance will last about one hour.  Scheduled to appear:

  • NPC's "Aguilas de Oro", Mexican Folklore Dance Club, June 21st, 1PM
  • Mel Bradshaw, Western Artist and Performer, June 28th, 1PM
  • Tommy Dukes, Member of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame, July 5th, 1PM
  • Rhoda Linstra, Musician on Keyboard and Accordian, July 11th, 5-7PM
  • Winslow Starz, Dance Troupe, July 12th, 11AM
  • Homovoli Dance Group, Hopi Dancers, Singers, Drummers, July 19th, 1PM
  • Winslow Harvey Girls, Trunk Show of Fred Harvey memorabilia, July 26th, 10AM to 4PM

Due to space constraints, this event will be held at Snowdrift Art Space, 102 E. Second Street, just one block from the Museum.  Hours of operation will be Tuesday through Saturday 10AM to 4PM, with extended hours on Fridays until 7PM. We will be closed July 4th all day.  Old Trails Museum will maintain regular hours during this exhibit.
